Me and Charlie.
The cute little guy with the wheels; that's Charlie. He's a little dynamo of resilience, mischief, and curiosity wrapped in a perfect little twelve-pound package. I'm Stace, otherwise known as Charlie's mom. Together, we're exploring the world, seeking adventures, and reconnecting to our wild.
I crave the wilderness, shore lines, the smell of campfire lingering on my jacket, and the open road with Charlie by my side. Far Fetched Adventures is how we tell our story of an adventurous lifestyle filled with new discoveries and new friends - all with Charlie as the compass.
In February of 2018, he and I left the "Standard American Diet" of keeping up with the Jones' and we're pursuing our purpose of advocating and serving special needs pets far and wide. Charlie changed my life and inspires me every day. He is a gift too big for mere words to describe.
How We met.
Charlie and I met in Florida. It was May 2009. He had been found paralyzed on the side of the road in Orlando and was scheduled to be euthanized. No one knows how his injury occurred, except Charlie. A rescue organization in Sarasota stepped in to foster him. I was running a non-profit animal ambulance at the time and agreed to transport him from Orlando to the rescue's location in Sarasota. After taking one look at this little man, I knew instantly that his name was Charlie. I had never had the pleasure of meeting a "handi-capable" dog before. In the time it took me to drive from Orlando to Sarasota, I was smitten. Two months later, I officially became his mom and there hasn't been a dull moment since.
Adventures. Destinations. Gear.
Around here, life literally revolves around Charlie, and I couldn't be happier. To see the world through his eyes is a blessing that I'm challenged to adequately describe. Every trip, every adventure, and all the everyday experiences...he's my Lewis and I'm his Clark.
I don't go unless he can go.
Paralyzed from the waist down, Charlie certainly has physical challenges beyond needing a wheelchair. That's where I come in. I handle his special needs, and he never ceases to amaze me with his tenacity of spirit and eagerness to explore. In return, He's given me more love than a human deserves and a new perspective on pretty much everything.
A plethora of experiences and skill sets as varied as a topographical map of Colorado, my life has been rich with lessons, adventures, and unforgettable memories.
Professionally, I've spent 22 successful years in the world of human biomechanics and strength and conditioning as both a clinician and coach. By nature, I'm drawn to emergency medicine which led me to serve for six years as a volunteer backcountry EMT for search and rescue in Colorado.
Simultaneously, I worked as a veterinary technician so I could learn the same life saving skills for any non-human being in need that crossed my path. As of August 2018, I begin a bachelors degree program in Veterinary Nursing through Purdue University and I couldn't be more excited. As a Veterinary Nurse, I will be able to pursue the field of animal physical therapy and rehabilitation and work with other special needs kids just like Charlie. My heart is called to serve; my passion is serving the voiceless. As with any life well lived, there are layers, twists, turns, peaks, and valleys. I'm grateful for all of them and looking forward to the road ahead with Charlie.
Far Fetched Adventures was born from this passion to give my "kids" the most amazing life possible while simultaneously enjoying it with them. I'm sure most parents of both the two-legged and the four-legged varieties can relate. Sadly, Charlie's big sister, Ziggy Marie, passed away from lymphatic cancer on January 12, 2018; just before we were about to set out on this new journey. She's the adorable, fuzzy, black and white dog you see with Charlie in a lot of his photos. The loss took a toll but, we know that Zig wouldn't want us to change our plans. She still goes everywhere with us; just with wings.
Grab a seat next to Charlie, and share the road with us. We'd love to bring you along on this adventure.
