Back to School!!

It's almost midnight. I should be sound asleep but, every time I close my eyes, they fly right back open and my brain is buzzing loud enough to keep even Charlie and Jazz awake..

I feel like a little kid that can't wait for morning to get here so I can put on my new outfit and carry my new backpack to school loaded down with my textbooks, notebooks, and pencils. And, if I'm honest, I'll likely do just that except the classroom will be my dining room table and instead of a juice box, I'll be holding a steaming cup of coffee that I'll spill on my shirt before I even take the first sip.

True story. Every time.

He so tolerates me.

He so tolerates me.

At 41, I didn't think I'd be experiencing back to school jitters. I thought I had sufficiently buried my veterinary dreams sufficiently enough that they'd leave me alone or at least be adequately muffled so that I wouldn't be able to make out what they were saying. Apparently, true callings die hard. And, I'm so, so glad.

Tomorrow is my first official day as a Veterinary Nursing student at Purdue University. Their distance learning option makes it possible for nomadic adventurers like myself to pursue higher academia from afar as long as I work with a veterinary mentor wherever I am. Ranked as the number one veterinary nursing college in the U.S., the program is rigorous...exactly the way I wanted it to be. In addition to their reputation as a highly regarded institution, I chose Purdue because of Charlie.

My days with this little man are a precious gift. His CHF and kidneys are stable for now and I want to savor every second with him. His emotional wellbeing is just as important to me as his physical and going back to school for eight hour days is just not an option I would even consider. Sure, you can call it pure co-dependence..and you'd be right. And, I'm completely ok with that. This little boy is my whole world so whatever I do has to fit into that space, not the other way around. This program at Purdue lets me participate in all the same classes as the on-campus students without having to leave Charlie at home. Eventually, I will have to seek out internships with veterinarians but, I have some time before that's necessary. Because it's a distance degree, I will finish with an A.S. however, I have the option of turning it into a B.S. with additional coursework completed on campus. I'll worry about that later. In the meantime...

This semester I'm taking:

  • Anatomy I

  • Physiology I

  • Pharmacy Practices and Calculations

  • Intro to Veterinary Nursing.

If I were any more excited, I'd be glowing like a small planet.

Twenty years later, being an older student is WAAAAAY more fun. I'm literally excited for homework assignments and exams! I guess this is what it feels like when you finally figure out why you're here bee boppin' around on this big blue beach ball in the sky.  I can't wait to bring you all along for the ride.

Between Charlie, Jasmine, Stan the Steer, Matilda the Cow, Wanda the goat, all the Golden Girls (the sheep), and the chickens here on the farm, I have a menagerie of "professors" right in my backyard.

Your support along the way means the world to me and I'm so very thankful. we go! School is in session!

Charlie is my study buddy.jpeg
